What results can you expect?
The results of laser tattoo removal can vary depending on several factors, including the size, colors, and depth of the tattoo, as well as your skin type and any existing scarring.
Gradual fading:
You will typically see your tattoo gradually fade after each treatment. It’s rewarding to notice visible progress session by session.
Number of treatments:
Tattoo removal usually requires multiple sessions for optimal results. The exact number of treatments depends on various factors—details below.
Color changes:
Our laser can target all colors. If we can’t remove it, no one can.
Skin type:
Results may vary based on skin type. Darker skin tones may have a higher risk of pigmentation changes.
Professionalism and equipment matter:
Choosing an experienced and qualified practitioner is critical for achieving the best possible results. While many can remove tattoos, we have highly trained nurses with extensive skin care experience, and we use the Pico laser—the most powerful and effective tattoo removal laser worldwide. It’s also gentle, causing significantly fewer side effects than older lasers. Learn more about the benefits of the Pico laser.
Patience is key:
Tattoo removal is a gradual process, and patience between sessions is crucial for the best results. With the Pico laser, you’ll achieve your goals more quickly. Stopping halfway through may leave you with a partially removed tattoo, which no one wants!
Before treatment
Before starting laser tattoo removal, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure optimal results:
Free consultation: It’s important to have a consultation so we can assess your unique situation and set realistic expectations based on your individual circumstances.
Sunlight and tanning: Avoid excessive sun exposure or tanning in the treatment area for several weeks before the procedure. Sunburned skin can increase the risk of side effects like pigmentation changes and scarring—this includes self-tanning products!
Pain tolerance: Be prepared for some discomfort or pain. Patients often describe the sensation as a mild burn or a rubber band snap. For added comfort, you can purchase the PainFree numbing cream for DKK 190 at our clinics.
Understanding risks and side effects: Be aware of potential side effects, such as temporary redness, swelling, blisters, or scabbing.
The treatment process
Here’s how it works: Every treatment begins with a consultation with our nurse. If you’re just starting, we’ll give you all the details about the procedure. If you’re already undergoing treatments, we’ll evaluate your tattoo at each session to provide the most effective treatment based on your skin’s current condition and the tattoo’s appearance.
Technical details: The Pico laser emits high-frequency light pulses that are absorbed by the pigment in the skin. This breaks the pigment down into smaller particles. Over time, your body’s white blood cells remove and expel these pigment fragments.
What kinds of tattoos can be removed?
-
Regular tattoos done by tattoo artists
-
Semi-permanent tattoos like permanent makeup (micro-pigmentation)
-
Medical tattoos (e.g., radiation marks)
-
Asphalt tattoos
-
-
Homemade tattoos (stick-and-poke)
If you’re not satisfied with a tattoo but don’t want to remove the entire thing, we can help fade or partially remove it so you can have it retouched or recolored by a tattoo artist.
How many treatments will I need? Good question! Tattoos are designed to be permanent, so effective removal usually requires multiple sessions. The exact number of sessions depends on several factors, such as:
-
Tattoo color
-
Size—larger tattoos may need to be divided into smaller treatment areas to reduce the risk of complications and side effects
-
The amount and density of ink used in the tattoo
-
Layered tattoos—a tattoo placed over an existing one will take longer to remove than a single-layer tattoo
-
Amateur tattoos are generally easier to remove because they often contain fewer pigment particles, and the particles tend to be less deeply embedded
-
Underlying colors, such as permanent makeup pigments that become more visible when removing brow tattoos, may take longer to fade completely
When can I have my next treatment? The laser continues to work in your skin for several weeks after each session, so you must wait at least six weeks between treatments.
After your treatment
After your session, the skin around your tattoo may be slightly swollen and red, but this should subside within a few hours. You may experience small blisters, scabs, or minor bleeding, all of which are temporary. Your skin may feel slightly tender for a few weeks following treatment. It’s essential to follow your nurse’s aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing and minimize side effects.
As the tattoo breaks down, you’ll notice areas where the ink has disappeared. This occurs gradually over the course of your treatment. The cost may also decrease as the tattoo becomes smaller and less ink remains to be removed.
How much does tattoo removal cost?
The cost depends on the size of the tattoo and the number of sessions required for complete removal. See our tattoo removal pricing for more details.
Do you have large or multiple tattoos you want to remove?
At DermoCosmetic, we not only provide the highest quality tattoo removal results in the shortest possible time, but our prices are also reasonable—especially if you have larger or multiple tattoos. We understand that removing large or multiple tattoos can feel overwhelming.
You also have the option to divide the treatment of a large tattoo or a larger area into smaller sessions. Rather than treating the entire area in one go, we can focus on half of it at a time. And this won’t cost you extra—you only pay for the total treated area.

Tattoo on the Neck and Removal of Black Tattoo (1st Treatment)
Tattoo Removal on the Face

Anders has had tattoos removed from his face. He has received 7 treatments, and the tattoos are gone in several areas. Approximately 3-5 more treatments are needed on the right cheek. This tattoo requires a few extra treatments because it was originally done by the tattoo artist with a so-called liner needle, also known as a lining needle, which deposits the ink deeply and forcefully into the skin.

The tattoo on Anders' face was previously attempted to be removed at another clinic, but the only result was large scars in the tattooed area, which are still clearly visible even though the color pigment has disappeared. After Anders undergoes one final tattoo removal with laser, the scars will be reduced with a different type of laser.

The result after 7 treatments - the latest picture was taken before the customer's (eighth) final treatment, where we will remove the remaining shadow.

This tattoo has been removed in just five treatments with our effective Pico laser. The skin is white around the tattoo because the customer has protected it with sunscreen, allowing us to treat it over the summer.
PICO LASER TECHNOLOGY
Discovery Pico is the most powerful and effective tattoo removal laser in the world. At the same time, it is gentle and causes significantly fewer side effects than older lasers. The Pico technology generally requires fewer treatments in less time.
Moreover, we can remove more tattoo colors than most, as we have supplemented the Discovery Pico laser with a Q-Switch Ruby 694 nm laser. Black, dark blue, red, orange, purple, and brown tattoos can now all be removed. Note: This treatment is only available in Aalborg, Skodsborg, and Copenhagen.
The new Discovery Pico laser compared to existing lasers on the market
Most tattoo removal lasers on the Danish market are outdated nano Q-Switch tattoo removal lasers or even older, less effective lasers that often fail to deliver results and come with side effects.
The new Pico technology in our Discovery Pico laser more than halves the time it takes to remove tattoos while offering much greater safety and minimal side effects. Additionally, we can remove almost all tattoo colors.
See a comparison of tattoo removal lasers here.
The Discovery Pico laser operates at incredible speed, measured in picoseconds (trillionths of a second, or a thousand times faster than traditional Q-Switch lasers, which are measured in nanoseconds). With Pico technology, there is less heat, less discomfort, and a lower potential for side effects.
Our Pico laser breaks down the ink in your tattoo not only from boulder-sized particles to gravel but from gravel to dust, making it easier for your body’s natural waste removal system to clear the ink particles. The result is fewer treatments needed and a better chance of making the tattoo completely invisible without ghosting shadows.
More than 15 years of expert laser treatment experience
DermoCosmetic is a cosmetic dermatology clinic with over 15 years of experience in advanced laser treatments. As experts in all aspects of skin care, we ensure safe and reliable tattoo removal.
We have closely followed the development of tattoo removal lasers over the years. Only now, with the Discovery Pico laser, are we as dermatologists confident that the technology is safe and effective enough to offer treatment in our cosmetic dermatology clinic in Copenhagen.
We offer free consultations for tattoo removal at our clinics in Copenhagen, Skodsborg, and Aalborg.
Fast healing, less discomfort
Discovery Pico is known for providing minimal pain during treatment and extremely fast skin healing after each session.
During treatment, discomfort and pain are minimized, and the skin cooling system helps reduce swelling and trauma in the skin in the hours following treatment.
Shorter overall treatment course and lower risk of scarring
The risk of skin damage, such as scarring, is significantly lower with the Discovery Pico laser compared to traditional Q-Switch lasers. You can complete your treatment course more quickly and achieve effective results.
This is partly because only six weeks are needed between sessions.
How does tattoo removal with the Pico laser work?
The laser targets the tattooed area with ultrashort light pulses. This prevents the skin around the pigment particles from overheating and ensures that the top layer of skin is not damaged.
A cooling system reduces any discomfort during treatment. The cooling system works throughout the treatment course, alongside the laser, as it removes tattoo particles from the skin.
Unlike other cooling methods, such as contact cooling, cryogen spray, or ice packs, our cooling system can be used before, during, and after the tattoo removal process.
The treated skin will temporarily turn white ("frosting") as water evaporates from the epidermis when the tattoo pigments explode due to heat. In some cases, small scabs may form if the heat has been particularly intense.
COMPARISON OF LASERS
Most lasers on the market for tattoo removal are outdated nano Q-Switch lasers or even older, poorly functioning devices. Below is an overview of the features of different types of lasers, ranging from budget lasers to the latest Discovery Pico laser.
Multi-color removal
All tattoos with colors require specific lasers for treatment. Only the color black is absorbed by all laser types. Therefore, it is crucial to treat colored tattoos with multiple active lasers tailored to the tattoo’s specific colors.
Many clinics use so-called polymer color filters that "convert" laser energy into another color, claiming they utilize 2, 3, or 4 different lasers. The issue with these passive lasers is that almost no energy remains after the conversion, resulting in extremely poor treatment efficacy. At DermoCosmetic, we use three color-active pico- and nanosecond lasers with 1064, 532, and 694 nanometer wavelengths for efficient and safe full-spectrum treatment.
Less discomfort
Nanosecond lasers rely on a combination of heat and mechanical pressure. Modern picosecond lasers use purely mechanical pressure waves, significantly reducing heat dispersion in the skin.
Stubborn tattoos
“Stubborn tattoos” occur when the laser used is technically inadequate. This can leave the entire outline of the tattoo as a "ghost shadow" with deep and/or inadequately treated ink particles in the skin.
Picosecond lasers, however, can often fragment the ink into extremely small dust particles that are quickly removed by the immune system. Some pigments are very small to begin with and can be difficult or impossible to remove with nanosecond lasers. When the laser is powerful enough, even deep tattoos can be removed, no matter how “heavy-handed” the tattoo artist was.
It is possible to experience “ghost shadows” even if all the ink has been removed. This is because scarring may occur in the skin as a direct consequence of the tattooing process—or worse, from previous removal attempts with a budget laser that left scars.
At DermoCosmetic, our dermatologists offer scar treatment using various fractional lasers.
Faster re-treatment and fewer sessions
Modern picosecond lasers break tattoos into much smaller fragments, which are quickly absorbed by the immune system. This results in fewer sessions compared to older technologies, and the interval between treatments is often shorter.
Deep tattoos
Professional multi-colored tattoos are often placed in layers, with dark colors embedded deeply and lighter colors closer to the surface. Each tattoo artist has their own style and technique. A “heavy-handed” tattoo can result in unusually deep ink, making it more challenging to completely remove.
The combination of powerful lasers, picosecond pulses, and large treatment spots means that at DermoCosmetic, we can treat virtually any tattoo safely and effectively. We use the Quanta Discovery Pico, the strongest medical laser, which is at least twice as powerful as other picosecond lasers on the market.
Low risk of scarring
All professional tattoo removal lasers today have relatively flat treatment spots—some more advanced than others.
This does not apply to budget lasers, often purchased online for a few thousand kroner. You get what you pay for, and these budget lasers frequently have “hot spots” that lead to scarring and even bleeding during treatment.
Additionally, these lasers are often so weak that the spot is reduced to a very small focal point just to achieve a minimum effect. The result is typically blisters, scars, and an overall aesthetic outcome far worse than the original tattoo.
At DermoCosmetic, we not only remove tattoos but also treat scarring from previous unprofessional removal attempts.
Safe on dark skin
Many of the laser types commonly used for tattoo removal have very high absorption in the skin’s natural pigment.
Even modern picosecond lasers introduced with only one treatment wavelength may be entirely unsuitable for treating darker skin types. For individuals with darker skin, having multiple active lasers to choose from is particularly important.
At DermoCosmetic, we use the Nd:YAG 1064 nm picosecond laser, which has minimal impact on natural pigmentation and is considered safe for use on all skin types.
REMOVAL OF PERMANENT MAKEUP
Have you had semi-permanent makeup applied to your eyebrows that you’re not satisfied with? Or has the color become dull over time? We can remove the semi-permanent makeup using the world’s most advanced Pico laser technology.
Semi-permanent makeup is often the easiest and quickest type of tattoo to remove. Other tattoo types generally require more treatments because the ink is deposited deeper in the skin. Note: This treatment is only available in Aalborg and Copenhagen.
Remove semi-permanent makeup with top-quality laser equipment
As a cosmetic dermatology clinic, we offer removal of semi-permanent eyebrow makeup using the latest and most advanced Pico laser technology available. We are also the first in Denmark to offer the newest generation of Pico laser: Discovery Pico.
Treatment with this cutting-edge laser technology provides you with:
• more effective treatments and fewer sessions needed
• fast skin healing
• minimal discomfort during the procedure
• greater safety and significantly reduced risk of skin damage
• shorter overall treatment times
